Draw odds / New Mexico
The draw is how New Mexico Department of Game and Fish hands out its limited deer, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, oryx, ibex, barbary-sheep, javelina and black bear tags: you apply by the deadline, and the system below decides who is drawn. Deer, Elk — All applicants
Pure random draw: tags ÷ applicants, points play no part.
Applications close 18 March 2026, 5 p.m. Mountain; results 22 April. Three choices, plus an optional FOURTH available only for deer and elk — and only worth listing by someone genuinely willing to accept any deer or elk licence anywhere in the state, since it is examined after every other applicant's first three. Licences are allocated on the 84/10/6 minimum split, so resident and nonresident odds come out of different quotas and averaging them would misstate both. Elk is where the split bites hardest: the quality hunts draw four-figure resident applicant pools against a nonresident allocation of a handful of tags.
Pronghorn, Bighorn sheep, oryx, ibex, barbary-sheep, Javelina — All applicants

Same window as deer and elk — 18 March 2026 — but with three choices only; the fourth-choice option does not extend to these species. Oryx, ibex and Barbary sheep are hunted nowhere else in the United States. All three are introduced populations on and around the Tularosa Basin and the Florida Mountains, and NMDGF draws them under the same random, no-points rules as everything else, which makes them the purest lottery tickets in the product: a once-in-a-lifetime oryx hunt is exactly as likely in a hunter's first year as in their thirtieth. Several oryx hunts are restricted to White Sands and McGregor Range military land and carry their own eligibility.
Black bear — All applicants

Points: none. New Mexico has no preference points, no bonus points and no squaring. An unsuccessful application confers nothing on the next one, and NMDGF states it plainly: the department "does NOT grant preference to applicants who were unsuccessful in previous drawings." This is the single most important thing to tell a New Mexico applicant, because every points-based mental model gets it backwards. A hunter who has applied for fifteen straight years stands exactly where a first-time applicant stands. There is no point at which a hunt "comes due", nothing is lost by skipping a season, and no reason to apply for a hunt you do not want in order to build toward one you do. What replaces the currency is the allocation quota — see the draws below. A nonresident's odds are set by the 6% pool, not by patience.
Parties: allowed — averaged points round to the nearest whole point (.5 rounds up). Parties of up to 4. Up to four hunters may apply together. With no points there is nothing to average, so `rounding` is inert here and recorded only because the schema carries it: the draw assigns ONE random sequence number to the application and examines it in its entirety, so a party is drawn or refused as a unit. A mixed party is the case worth knowing: a resident applying with one or more nonresidents is issued a licence only if licences remain in BOTH pools. Adding a nonresident to a resident party therefore cannot improve the resident's odds and can only constrain them.
